Gift of Yulla Lipchitz in Honor of Paul and Ruth Tishman

Modeled in plaster in 1923-25, Bather was Lipchitz’s first life-sized sculpture. The subject appeared frequently in his work between 1915 and 1925.

A nude figure with drapery hanging down its back is represented in a relaxed standing pose. The sculpture exemplifies Lipchitz’s Cubist style at its purest and most rigorous, reducing the natural forms of the human body to their essential architecture. Masses are opened and an uncomplicated recession of planes from left to right is uncovered. The result is an image of the body as a calm, orderly, immutable structure of interpenetrating planes and volumes.
